In 1999 and 2003, the OCA helped organize protests and teach-ins against the World Trade Organization in Seattle and Cancun. These mobilizatons were the coming of age of the global grassroots and the recognition that international crises demand global grassroots action. Now you have the opportunity to join OCA Director Ronnie Cummins and other OCA staff on an escorted delegation to the historic teach-ins and rallies for climate justice and organic agriculture at the global climate crisis summit in Cancun, Mexico.

Over 100,000 concerned citizens from North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia are expected to converge on Cancun, including leading farm, food, Fair Trade, climate justice, and anti-GE activists. They’ll attend a wide range of workshops, forums, and cultural events. Following up on the theme of the World Social Forum, “Another World is Possible,” the emphasis in Cancun will be on presenting solutions and alternatives to the climate crisis.

The OCA delegation, will include international experts on organic agriculture and climate justice, including OCA Directors Ronnie Cummins and Alexis Baden-Mayer, organic farm leader and author, Will Allen, and author and food activist Jill Richardson.

World famous speakers and activists including, James Hansen, Bill McKibben, Pat Mooney, and Maude Barlow are expected to make presentations at the Grassroots Summit, which will take place simultaneously with the global negotiations of leaders from every nation in the world.

During the week of teach-ins and protests,  the OCA delegation will be housed in comfortable accommodations in the city of Cancun.

There are two housing options:

Chacmool Hostel,

7-day Tour: $750.

The hostel sits directly on the corner of Palapa Park, where all the activities are expected to take place.  This is also where the OCA will host all of its conferences, speakers and workshops.  Cancun’s most famous taco stand is on the ground level of the hostel, serving up affordable, traditional Mexican food and drinks until 2am.

This is an ideal option for students or those on a tight budget.  Rooms and beds are available on a first-come-first served basis and will include dorm style beds, breakfast, welcome dinner, transportation to and from the airport and all speakers and conferences.  They also offer economical tours to local attractions.

Ramada Hotel,

7-day Tour: $950.

The Ramada is only blocks away from Palapa Park. The hotel has a free shuttle to the beach, fitness center, pool, and restaurant/bar.  Rooms can be booked at a double or single occupancy rate and include breakfast, dinner with the delegation at local restaurants, transportation to and from the airport, and all speakers and conferences.  Guests at the Ramada are also welcome to book tours through the hostel, which offers affordable rates to all local attractions.

Apertura de Tianguis Orgánico

Se dará inicio al primer tianguis orgánico de San Miguel de Allende  el sábado, 7 de agosto a partir de las 9 de la mañana hasta las 2 de la tarde en el Parque Juárez.

El Tianguis Orgánico de San Miguel de Allende (TOSMA) destacará productos orgánicos certificados locales, y productos que actualmente están en proceso de transición a métodos orgánicos, además de otros productos artesanales de San Miguel y sus alrededores. Productores orgánicos del estado de Michoacán también estarán presentes ofreciendo productos de su región que no son disponibles en el estado de Guanajuato.  La meta es ofrecer a los consumidores una variedad de productos locales y además la oportunidad de aprender más sobre sus alimentos, de donde provienen y como se producen. English Language Biointensive Agriculture Workshop: August 14, 21, 28

“Biointensive” is a cutting-edge method of organic farming and gardening, incorporating traditional methods, appropriate in both urban and rural settings, spearheaded by agronomist John Jeavons and the California-based organization, Ecology Action, which generates maximum yields on minimum areas of land, with a goal of long-term sustainability and soil improvement.

Biointensive methods can produce between two and four times the number of vegetables and herbs per acre as traditional organic and chemical farming. As the world population grows, it is essential to find alternatives to the relatively low yields of conventional energy and chemical-intensive monoculture. Biointensive, like all organic agriculture, takes carbon dioxide from the air and stores it in the soil, does not rely on fossil fuels, and increases yields.

Luc Monzies and Jennifer Ungamach, Via Organica¹s resident expert and a student of John Jeavons, will be holding English language, Biointensive Agriculture Workshop for three consecutive Saturdays beginning August 14 at the Via Organica farm school. The course will also include an introduction to soil microbiology, compost tea brewing and clay pot irrigation.

Primera Semana en Julio

Ahora es momento de cumplir el reto de escribir frecuentemente sobre los eventos que acontecen en el huerto de Vía Orgánica.La idea es que estas páginas se conviertan en un tipo de diario en un tipo de diario para nosotros y sirven como una herramienta de aprendizaje y retroalimentación  para otros.  Se pensó en comenzar   “el diario” hace semanas, pero entre una cosa y otra  se llego a esta fecho. Parte del huerto ya tiene casi 5 meses y estamos terminando el primer ciclo de cultivo.  Otra parte lleva un par de meses. Esperamos documentar esta experiencia aquí.

E l fin pasado tuvimos el placer de ser anfitriones de un grupo de 30 personas de diferentes zonas del país.  Vinieron desde Chihuahua, México y Guanajuato para el taller de Agricultura Biointensiva con instructores invitados, Marisol Tenorio y Agustín Medina, instructores certificados.  El taller se desarrolló entre el Charco de Ingenio (parte teórica) y el Huerto (parte práctica).  El taller enfocó en ver los ocho principios del método:

    Uso de Composta
    Preparación Profunda de la Cama 
    Siembra Cercana Asociaciones y Rotaciones 
    Uso de Semillas de Polinización Abierta
    Cultivos de Carbono y Calorias (cultivos para composta y para nutrición)
    Cultivos Eficientes en Area y Calorías (como las papas y camotes)
    Sistema Integral

Se organizaron prácticas para hacer composta, preparacion de almácigos, clasificación de semillas, diseño de asociaciones y rotaciones entre otras dinámicas participativas. 

Tuvimos mucha suerte con las lluvias que apenas afectaron el desarrollo del taller, pero a la vez, dieron nuestras tierras la precipitación ya muy necesitada.

Nos agradó poder vender nuestras primeras semillas orgánicas durante el taller. Contamos con una producción de girasol, lechuga, perejil, cilantro, perejil, jitomate, entre otras.  En la misma semana, aprendimos una lección muy importante: nuestra calendarización de producción de semillas tiene que tomar muy en serio la fecha de las lluvias.  Como trasladamos el huerto hace poco, estábamos atentos al hecho de ese desafío para este ciclo de cultivo.  Sabíamos que la mayor parte de producción de semilla debe ser en otra época del año.  Igual, nos dolió perder mucha semilla de lechuga que estaba lista.  Es la lección de siempre: La mejor medida es la prevención. En este caso, es le prevención de una buena planificación.
